Correspondence between Fitzgerald and Hugh Buckley, Winnipey, Manitou, Canada. Buckley had written in anger to the Lord Mayor of Cork after reading a report in Canadian Time that Chinese workers from Hong Kong were to be sent by Verlome to Cork (Clipping enclosed. The letter was referred to Fitzgerald who wrote to assure him that Irish people are always put first at Verlome and the story is inaccurate. 4 items

1224 6 August 1960

Copy letter to the Society Anonyme, Somerton, Geneva, from Verlome Dockyard advising them they have to withdraw their quotation for the Refrigerated Steam Trawler due to difficulties in acquiring Political Risk Credit Insurance. 2pp

1225 28-30 September 1960

Correspondence between Fitzgerald and Percy McGrath, Chairman of the Tea Council of Ireland Ltd., Dublin. Fitzgerald inquires if a plea for India to place orders for shipbuilding in Ireland could be included on the itinery of the Tea imports visit to India. He points out Ireland imports £5 million worth of tea in 1959. Also copy covering letter to A. Rijko, Verlome, Holland enclosing copies of the correspondence and discussing the Directors disquiet about the attendance at Board meetings of Mr. Scoute and Mr. Kilty. Also newsclipping of the Indian visit. 4 items

Letter to Fitzgerald from William Sandys, Griffin Lynch and Co., confirming the introduction of a new book-keeping system shouldn't pose any problems. 1p

1227 17 October 1960

Letter from Stephen Barrett, Lord Mayor of Cork, to Fitzgerald expressing "as temperately as possible my regret and disapproval at the manner in which I, as Lord Mayor, and my wife as Lady Mayoress were received and entertained by your company on Saturday at the opening of Verlome Shipbuilding yard". He was left "roaming at large" until requested by two Dutch gentlemen and was then seated away from the dignitaries. He now hopes there will be a reversal of "your companies apparently deliberate policy of publicity ignoring the existence of the office I am honoured to hold".
