Copy letter from Fitzgerald to John Leydon, discussing Cork Dockyards formal application to Irish Shipping for a Loan. 1p

1134 11-19 March 1943

Confidential letter from John Leydon, Secretary Department of Supplies to Fitzgerald expressing his disquiet with management at Cork Dockyard. He feels increases in employees salaries were unwarranted and 11 11 unjustifiable, and is very concerned by the "extravagant prices" charged and warns Irish shipping Ltd. will not continue paying them when the Liffey Dockyard is so much cheaper. He feels an atmosphere of a "fools paradise" is being created and warns changes will have to be made if the Dockyard is to survive through the war. Copy replies from Fitzgerald (1) personal reply asserts he is very aware of the necessity of placing the dockyard on a sound footing (2) after a board meeting stating "All the Directors feel very strongly that your letter is not reasonable in its outlook."
