17 March 1916 Letter from Denis Hurley, Carson City, Nevada to his brother John. Thanks him for the bunch of shamrocks. John’s letter was ‘…honoured by being opened by the censor’. Hopes ‘…this awful war will come to an early close’. Mentions ‘trouble’ between America and Mexico. Asks if any Clonakilty man ‘distinguished himself in the war’ (First World War) . 1p 18 October 1916 Letter from Denis Hurley, Carson City, Nevada to his brother John. He is just back from his vacation in San Francisco. Brother Michael ‘is strong and well and a great pro-ally man. We could not agree in our views in many respects at home or abroad. He is strongly in favour of the re-election of President Wilson, while I intend to vote against him’. Glad to know John is ‘able to work as you did 40 years ago. I am working too and feeling pretty good…this is a world of toil and ups and downs’. 2pp 19 January 1920 Letter from Denis Hurley, Carson City, Nevada to his brother John. Says ‘Many of us here are anxiously awaiting the results of the recent elections.’ Mentions ‘some friction’ between Sinn Fein and nationalists such as Mayor O’Connor of Cork ‘being assaulted’. Thinks ‘they should be more tolerant and unite against the common enemy’. Hopes ‘the dove of peace will soon flutter all over the world’. Mentions the prohibition of alcohol in the United States, and notes that ‘The abuse of drink is a curse but its total suppression works a hardship especially in cases of sickness’. Mentions the Russian Soviets gaining strength, ‘They seem to me to be like the French revolutionists before the advent of Napoleon’. Asks regarding local politics in Clonakilty. 2pp 17 October 1920 Letter from Denis Hurley, Carson City, Nevada to ‘Dear Niece’, Mary Hurley, Tawnies, Clonakilty, County Cork.
