Malting Analysis Records, 1914-94

Malting Analysis Records, JHB, 1914-1994. Analytical records generated by JHB as part of its regular malting operations [experimental records, generally generated as part of JHB’s role in operating the DoA Cereal Station, are placed in B609/7/B & D, below]. The sub-section includes laboratory and analysis books, as well as harvest result sheets noting moisture and protein content in barley samples. These latter are closely related to drying and weighbridge records, above (B609/2/F and G).

B609/2/H/1 Stock Book, 1885-1906, comprised of reports of particulars of malting seasons, with information on malt houses, quantities, and weather.

B609/2/H/2 Laboratory Book, November 1914 to October 1925 (1909). Volume recording malting loss and gain of moisture, observations, tables, and formal analyses (readings). The book covers each of the three malthouses. Near the back of the book is a Coal Test analysis, 1921. Inside the back cover are rough notes concerning taking and sending of samples (1909).

B609/2/H/3 Seed Barley Book, August 1926 to December 1950. Record of samples sent to AGS for analysis.

B609/2/H/4 Seed Analysis Book, 1945-62. Volume recording kiln, grower, type of seed, and moisture measurements. The book also includes details of other analyses, e.g., copper sulphate modification tests. Some information on quantities and shipments occurs, but the volume is generally scientific. Indexed. B609/2/H/5 Analysis Book, August 1951 to June 1956. Record of barley drying, broken down by type of barley, malting house, and season. The book records details of barley delivered, kiln used (for drying), percentages of moisture screenings, broken grain, and dust, and when transferred. Oil and coal consumption also noted. Summary notes occur at the end of each season.

B609/2/H/6 Operational Analysis Book, September 1956 to October 1970. Similar to previous volume, but includes more information on deliveries.
