Malt Barley Drying and Fuel Consumption, 1894-1994
Malt Barley Drying and Coal and Oil Consumption Records, 1894 to 1994. Another set of malting records, this sub-section contains log books, kiln charts, and oil and coal use books. These record barley driers’ information, in respect of operation of drying kilns in each malt house. The kilns were fired by coal and/or oil for much of JHB’s history, although electrical fans were used in later years. See also B609/2/H/18-26 below. B609/2/G/1 Driers’ Log Book, 1974 to 1978. The log books record date, whether day or night shift, and which drier (which kiln, not the personnel involved). The volume then records time (checks carried out every two hours), moisture levels, temperatures, and bed speed. Findings are summarised on the opposite page. B609/2/G/2 Driers’ Log Book, 1979 to 1980.A number of pages at the front of the book give details of applications for malting barley contracts, for the years 1951, 1955, 1966, and 1974. These include names and addresses of applicants [see B609/2/A, above]. Most of the book is comprised of the driers’ log.
