Mansions, Killarney, South Africa [see also B609/9/A/51]. A small number of letters present are addressed to Trevor West, Principal, Midleton College [husband of Mrs Dorothy West]. A note of 27 May 1932 acknowledges a contribution to Cumann na nGaedheal. DoA letters have been placed at the front of the file. B609/1/D/5 Letters received, 1940-50. In a letter of 9 December 1949, the auditing firm of Magennis, Burns, Griffin, & Co forward Account and Balance Sheet for the year ended 31 August 1949. Present is a statement of rates of pay, January 1943. A letter of 1 April 1941 concerns complaints of dust from the Cloyne Clay Company’s works [see also B609/9/E/6]. There are fewer scientific letters on this and subsequent files, though DoA letters still occur. B609/1/D/6 Letters received, 1950-60. Present is legal correspondence from January- February 1956 concerning lands held by Laurence Leahy of Innegrega, Midleton. Much correspondence with other maltings is present, regarding staff and local issues. Among 1955 letters is correspondence with Chillingworth and Levie, architects, regarding extension of the Cereal Station. A note of 12 September by Sir RHV Levinge, AGS, describes the organisation of JHB’s Management Committee, and stresses the need for re-organisation, as four out of the five members of the committee are now directors, so that de facto it is very like the Board of Directors [see B609/4/B & C below]. In a letter of 16 May 1966, Gerald O’Mahony, 4 The Crescent, Midleton, thanks the Board for a loan allowing him to purchase his new car. A note of 4 August 1954 gives estimated expenditure for the Cereal Station [see B609/7/C below]. A letter of 27 March 1953 contains a copy of an agreement between Midleton Worsted Mills and the ITGWU. Also present is correspondence (September-December 1952) with the National Lorry Owners’ Association. fourth is a letterbook 1963, sub-divided in parts a. and b. Part a. is stated to contain personal letters, and part b. contains job applications and related letters. The majority of letters present are outgoing. There is much correspondence present with T Meehan, The Crescent Trust Co, Dublin, which acts as company secretary to JHB, handling salary and revenue affairs. A letter of 2 November 1960 notes a 20% salary increase for Mrs West and Mr Read, JHB. It is noted that Mr Read gets a free house, light, and coal. The ‘personal’ part of the letterbook in fact contains many business letters, the more personal items being letters to other maltsters and seed merchants. These include Lt Col Bradish, Tom Davis, Mrs Hutson, Franz Latchford, Midleton College, Allan Navratil, and Leslie Thompson. Present is correspondence regarding the appointment of Thomas O’Sullivan of Rosehill as an agricultural advisor to the Cereal Station. Also documented are dealings with legal representatives (Exham O’Flynn), and stockbrokers (Alfred Beale & Son, Cork). The part containing applications for jobs and references is indexed. B609/1/D/7 Letters received, 1960-70. This file has four distinct parts. The first is loose items post-1965. The second is a file wallet of letters 1965 to 1969.
