forms agreeing to pay the 1972 Malting Barley Levy to the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA). Another letter of the same date notes that the majority of growers nationally are paying the levy. Another small file.

B609/1/A/57 Letters from AGS, August 1973 to August 1974. A letter of 28 January 1974 sets out arrangements for malting barley contracts 1974, as agreed between AGS, IME, and the National Grain Committee of the IFA. Dated 23 November 1973 is a letter from A Edmonds, General Manager, JHB, to Chillingworth & Levie, Architects, Cork, regarding the new granary and alterations at the Cereal Station [see B609/6/B/36]. In a letter of 25 October regarding barley prices, it is noted that a barrel equals 100kg. A letter of 28 September encloses JHB’s agreement with AGS to buy barley for them during the 1973 harvest. Among letters for September is a table breaking down barley purchases for 1973. This notes malting barley, IME export barley, seed barley, and flaking barley. A letter of 21 August concerns the purchase by AGS of the business of WB Nunn & Co, barley agents and seed merchants, Wexford and Castlebridge. A copy of a statement for the press is enclosed.

B609/1/A/58 Letters from AGS, September 1977 to November 1978. Mainly letters regarding buying instructions, prices, and stocks. Includes blank barley registration forms. Small file.

B609/1/A/59 AGS Barley Competition, 1978-90 (1954). Records of an annual AGS event, in which prizes are awarded to the growers of the best samples of barley, as selected and submitted by AGS commission maltsters. The malting houses each held their own competition to select their entries. There were separate prizes for different varieties of barley. The file contains correspondence between AGS and JHB, lists of growers, guest lists, results, copies of press releases, and so on. This file relates principally to JHB growers and related arrangements. It also contains a photocopy of a list of Results of JHB Barley Competitions from 1952 to 1976, and a newscutting of winners of the first AGS competition in 1954. The competition is referred to in AGS files from 1954 on. [See also B609/1/A/38 and B609/8/B/8 below]
