B609/1/A/40 Letters from AGS, September 1956 to August 1957. A letter of 28 August 1957 from GP Jackson to Mrs West informs her that the brewery is to discontinue inspection of Class A and B seeds, and explains its reasons for this decision. A letter of 16 August concerns claims that the issue of AGS barley contracts is influenced by the contractor’s requirements of manures, other seeds, and other produce not referred to in the contract. It is stated that AGS would cease to use any contractor found to be imposing such conditions. A letter of 25 July regarding the Road Census notes the predicted increase in wheat and roots grown in East Cork. A letter of 17 May concerns plans to have inspection of seed carried out by maltsters, as the DoA is no longer in the position to carry out all the inspections it performed hitherto. A letter of 3 May, addressed to Mrs West at the Cereal Station, requests meteorological records for 1956 to facilitate preparation of the EBC Barley Committee report. A letter of 25 March is in regard to the supply to the Cereal Station of 5cwts of Certified Original Seed Proctor from the National Institute of Agricultural Botany, Cambridge. A letter of 28 January contains a copy of form of registration to grow malt barley. A letter of 13 November 1956, regarding fuel stocks, refers to ‘the unsettled state of world affairs’. A letter of 23 October relates to arrangements for the AGS Malting Barley Competition. Guinness and Irish Malt Exports, and therefore you should not let any good barley slip through your hands’. Present dated 5 August is a letter from Jackson to Deasy & Co, Clonakilty, setting forth the schedule for delivery of their barley purchases. This includes Guinness barley to JHB and Guinness themselves, and ale malt to Beamish & Crawford. A letter of 21 July from Jackson to Mrs West gives a list of those taking part in this year’s Barley Tour visit to Ballinacurra. A letter of 16 May from E Dresser, Chief Engineer, Engineer’s Dept, AGS, to JHB, concerns rebate of duty on hydrocarbon oil. A letter of 12 January forwards forms for registration to grow roasting (feeding-type) barley. A letter of 10 February attaches a list showing distribution of Herta commercial seed barley. The list includes several co-ops and Messrs E Flahavan & Sons, B609/1/A/41 Letters from AGS, September 1957 to August 1958. In a letter of 12 August 1958, GP Jackson states, to Mrs West, ‘with the present harvest prospects it is most unlikely that we will get all our requirements for Kilmacthomas. A letter of 6 February includes a list showing distribution of 2 nd pedigree Beorna seed. A letter of 27 October forwards forms for the Proctor versus Beorna ‘Gallup’ poll, to be sent to farmers who grew Proctor this year. A post card dated 8 August 1959 has post stamp reading ‘My Goodness, 200 Years of Guinness’. A letter of 17 July 1959 concerns analysis of an Institute of Brewing extract of standard malt, and encloses a note and formula for making a determination. A letter of 16 March contains reference to the closing down of AGS’ Cook’s Lane Maltings at St James’s Gate Brewery. A letter of 30 January gives the full
