Fate of ship:

Went ashore 12 miles east of Penzance, 2 Feb 1918 and broke apart. The crew survived (Scott). Thomas Crowley was the owner/manager of the Kinsale Shipping Co., which continued sailing this vessel throughout the nineteenth century. She was the fourth schooner built by the Westacotts for Thomas Crowley (Scott). Captain Randel McCarthy previously sailed on Sutton ships and was captain of the Ellen Sutton 1884 – 7. No definitive familial relationship to the Suttons is known at this time, but Captain George Sutton (b.1804) was married to a Margaret McCarthy and it was their son George Sutton Jr (b.1836) who was the owner of Ellen Sutton . Captain John Mattson was likely to have been the Captain John Mattson, who was in command when the Colleen traded up the Blackwater to the Bride River in 1904 (O’Brien). He had the advantage of prior experience on the Bride in 1902, as Mate on the schooner Marion of Kinsale. Captain William Donovan was Master until 1902, was likely to have been familiar with the Bride river as Captain Thomas Donovan (b.1831, Courtmacsherry) was documented previously on the Bride river in the 1880s while Master of Citizen of Youghal (IMNCL; O’ Brien). *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M ; Sutton Family History; Scott, Irish Sea Schooners; O’Brien, Blackwater and Bride.
