19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Senior, was married to John Carroll, only son of Joshua Carroll, in January 1830 (O’Riordan) (see also Hebe).

Captain A Deaves in Lloyd’s was doubtless related to the Cork Deaves, who were butter and timber merchants with business and marital ties to the Harveys (the firm Harvey, Deaves & Harvey) (also see Apollo ). Both families were Quakers. While I failed to find a Captain A. Deaves, there were Captains Henry Deaves (b.1809, Cork) and Joseph Deaves (b.1801, Cork) with little further information in UK M&M records but doubtless related. Captain James Betty is documented as Master of Cork ships between 1836 and 1851. He would captain Bache McEvers in 1848.

Seaman Robert Merrick would obtain his Mate Certificate in 1851 and his Master Certificate in 1852.

Apprentice (future Captain) William Henry Deave Hargrave demonstrated a rapid rise from apprentice to mate on Bridgetown and would become Master of Pallas in 1847 and Hebe in 1849, while Joshua Hargrave (b.1829) would be his Mate on those latter vessels.
