19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Captain Benjamin Eastaway was one of two Eastaways brothers who captained the Barry vessels Pretty Maggie and Ballinacurra Lass ; he later sailed on the Mary & Anne and William S Green out of Youghal. Mate Thomas Taylor resided in Ballinacurra when he obtained his Master Certificate in 1851 and subsequently sailed out of Youghal.

This ship was listed by Lloyd’s with Gimlett as both the captain and the o wner and Anderson confirms that: ‘another emigrant ship was the Liverpool-built barque Barbadian , 245 tons, owned and commanded by Captain Gimlett who sold her to W. Herron of Belfast in 1850 for their West Indian trade ’ . Captain John Gimlett was listed in the UK National Archives as the Captain of John Daniel in 1835.
