barques Simeon Hardy , 224t, Glanmire , 246t, Mary Hardy , 451t, built respectively in 1837, 1840, and 1854, and the full rigger Hardy, 456t, also built in 1854 ……. These vessels principally traded to Barbadoes, with an occasional voyage to Demerara to pick up a cargo of sugar for home ’ (Anderson 1961). Coffee was also imported in earlier years. ‘ Until the late 1840s, Cork almost exclusively supplied the West Indies with wax candles and this trade was an extensive one. Another flourishing trade existed in the export of butter, pickled beef and other products making up the remainder of the cargoes ’ ( ibid ; see also Hebe ).
