5. NINETEENTH-CENTURY CORK CREW LIST

‘Not all who wander are lost’

Tolkien: The Riddle of Strider

Fig. 43: Blackrock Castle, three miles east of Cork City, built in 1829 at the confluence of the River Lee and Lough Mahon, was an iconic landmark for mariners returning and departing the Upper Harbour of Cork. Since the ages of individual mariners may vary significantly in crew list reports, approximations and ranges have been used. However sufficient detail is provided for those interested in pursuing family research and/or reviewing a broad sampling of the mariners operating on Cork ships. All these mariners served on sailing ships and are listed alphabetically with one or more of the ships on which they sailed.

Crew Status Symbols : C = Captain M = Mate (includes boatswain) S = Able Seaman A = Apprentice

This ship listing does not document all the sailing ships on which these mariners sailed, nor does it document any steam ships on which they might have sailed. Finally, Section 4, the list of nineteenth- century sailing ships, may amplify the background information on these mariners by listing their previous crew status on other ships. The crew status in this list is the highest each mariner attained.
