19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

An old sailor told me that when he first went to sea as a boy, his father was a seaman on board the same ship. On the first day out, the sea was smooth as glass and looking very attractive. The father called his son over to the rail and pointed down to the water: ‘Don’t trust it son and remember always that the se a is your worst enemy’ (Hackett 1995). The 94t Nellie Fleming ll (Reg: 83510, formerly Emily ) was built at Carrickfergus in 1884 and sailed out of Runcorn for many years before her purchase by Martin Fleming of Youghal c.1919 (CLIP). She went missing with all hands, on passage from Lydney to Cork on 8 February 1936 (Scott 2012).
