Fate of ship:
This ship was wrecked on 19 February 1904 after departure from Cardiff with just three crew, Captain Michael Loughlin, AB Michael Walsh and OS Daniel Coakley who were drowned. Mate James Loughlin had left the vessel in Cardiff to relieve a sick captain on another Farrell vessel (IMNCL). Mike Hackett of Youghal suggested it was Tommy Walsh who drowned but the IMNCL report is correct and is supported by the UK Nat Arch death reports on all three of these mariners. This ship traded in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea but trade commonly took this 93t schooner to Blackwater ports above the Port of Youghal. Captain William Eastaway first served on an Irish vessel as Mate on Alfred of Youghal in 1837 before becoming Master of Pretty Maggie of Cork in 1839. An interesting family role change here; one quite commonly previously noted. Captain William Eastaway Sr. (b.1815) and young Henry Eastaway (b.1841) switched captain and mate roles in 1864 for the experience. Henry earned his Master Certificate in 1864 and went on to captain the 86t Charles of Youghal in the coasting trade 1866 – 76. Captain John Evans switched captaincy to Farrell’s Victor in 1899. Seaman Charles Ahern served on other Farrell ships and was previously boatswa in on Farrell’s George Peake . *IMNCL; CLIP; UK M&M; O’Brien, Blackwater and Bride.
