19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Mate T homas O’Grady previously sailed on Eliza O’Keeffe , but otherwise sailed out of Liverpool and Padstow, Cornwall. He obtained his Master Certificate in 1882. Seaman John Mathias (b.1867, Ballinacurra) would earn his Master Certificate in 1894 and later captain the White Star liner Laurentic whose speed in 1910 had facilitated the trans- atlantic pursuit and capture of the murderer Hawley Harvey Crippen by Chief Inspector Walter Dew (see George Peake for further information on John Mathias Junior).

This ship remained active until 1888 (CLIP).

Lloyd’s 1862 indicates this ship to be lost and CLIP specifies that Amaranth was wrecked 24 November 1862. The wreck occurred at Cape Chat on the St Lawrence, when voyaging from Quebec City to Cork. The crew were rescued (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). Captain Robert McDowall would have been the Captain McDowall in Lloyd’s. He was master of the Leviathan of Cork 1845 – 9 and, later in 1863, captained the John Reed ship Golden Eagle . His Master Certificate number (Cert:72.163) documents him on the two Reed ships. Captain William Lloyd would have been the Captain W Lloyd in Lloyd’s. He previously captained another Reed ship. the Chepstow , 1845 – 8.
