Fate of ship:

Captain Jeremiah Clancy of Kinsale was listed as the owner on the IMNCL record at the start of 1881. Crew signed on 7 Jan 1881 and the ship was lost 15 Jan 1881 near Penarth after her anchors failed at Penarth Roads in an extraordinary storm. The crew were listed by name and to have been from Kinsale with ages unknown. However, Patrick and William Collins ages are apparent from IMNCL in 1880. Similarly Mate Michael McDaniel’s approximate age can be found in the 1880 record.

Additional information:

It is uncertain when this ship was built.

‘John Dawson & Co. owned barques, brigantines and schooners as well as steamships, and sent their larger vessels as far afield as Australia and the Americas’ (Anderson). Abraham Sutton’s ownership terminated in 1878 with ownership passing to Hannah Gough of Old George St., Cork. Captain R Sutton in Lloyd’s could have been either Captain Robert Sutton (b.1826/29, Kinsale) or Captain Robert Sutton (b.1832, Courtmacsherry). Another family member, Captain Robert Sutton (b.1836, Cork) had moved on to Liverpool before 1862, was shipwrecked on Sophia of Liverpool in North Carolina later that year and earned his Master Certificate in 1863 (Appendix 6: Sophia ). Captain George Nathaniel Sutton had interesting UK M&M application papers, suggesting that he made a failed attempt to falsify his age at that time. His older brothers were successful in that endeavour. Doubtless, knowledge and skillsets in those traditional mariner families prepared them at an early age for Master Mariner responsibilities. Captain George Sutton Jr was listed on an IMNCL record for 1866 as captain of White Eagle but lacked a Certification number. He was the third son of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty) and was also listed in Guy’s Directory 1875-76 and Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners as a Master Mariner. While he was a shipowner, this IMNCL record is the only documentation of him sailing a ship that has been found. He was also a sailmaker (Sutton & Donovan), chandler, Alderman for the NE Ward of Cork, Member of the Cork City Council, Superintendent of Tolls and Markets and a Cork
