19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Captain Cornelius Collins, an uncle or brother to Captain Patrick Collins was likely to have been the Captain C Collins in Lloyd’s (Michael O’ Mahoney, pers.com.) Captain Patrick Collins was previously Master on the Sutton ships Herbert and Petrel . He was married to Catherine Galvin of Cork, sister of Daniel Joseph Galvin (Cork Mayor 1882 – 4). It was noted in the Dundee Advertiser on 23 Nov 1861 that: ‘ Captain Patrick Collins of the Wave of Cork, died in his boat on the morning of the 20 th in Milford Harbour, having just left his vessel to go on shore ’ . Family history suggests his wife Catherine died with him at that time, leaving their young family to be raised by their uncle, Daniel Joseph Galvin. Safety was not always assured in the shelter of a harbour as exemplified by the death of another Captain Patrick Collins (b.1832, Kinsale), on White Eagle of Cork in 1881 at Penarth and by the demise of Captain Gerald L Walsh (b.1844, Cork) on the deck of Eagle of Cork in 1884 at Cardiff. Captain William Shea next captained the Sutton barque Charles and would renew his Master Certificate, lost when the Charles foundered, in 1869. The two William Sheas here were father and son of Friars Walk, Cork.

CLIP documents A. Sutton’s Wave only until 1869.
