Additional information:

Anderson suggests that the Cork Sutton ship fleet commenced with the purchase by Abraham Sutton of the 157t Wave . This seems to be incorrect. Lloyd’s documents the 157 t Wave as built in 1838 and owned and operated by three families out of Bideford 1838 – 52, the Pugsleys, the Bearers and the Pickards. She then moved to Cork on her acquisition by Abraham Sutton. Some of the earlier ships owned by Abraham Sutton were more likely to have been owned by a consortium of Sutton family members and associates. Captain Abraham Sutton (b.1813, Clonakilty), who retired from the sea to take on a full- time management role in July 1846, would then more likely appear as the primary owner, see the T Crowley for example. Captain John Sutton was a brother Abraham George Sutton (b.1842, Cork) and claimed a birthdate of 1832 on his Master Certificate application; his true birth year appears as 1834 on his Mate application and his baptismal record. He married Anne Baggott on 20 March 1854, with Captain Florence McCarthy (b.1823, Ring) as a witness, and lived at St Luke’s Cork, before moving to River View Summerhill, next door to his brother, Captain Robert G Sutton (b.1832, Courtmacsherry), c. 1870 and then on to Queenstown as a proprietor of the Sutton Cork Steam Tug Company and an active steam tug captain.
