19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

The Cork Carrolls were a major Cork Quaker merchant family in the nineteenth century and Volunteer was one of their earlier ships (see also Industry ). The Carrolls had a timber yard at Devonshire Marsh, Cork and the Quebec-trading Volunteer was likely to have been in the timber trade (Appendix 6: Timber trade). Mate Thomas Cooper Clarke had previously served his apprenticeship and a year as mate in North Shields and would remain in Cork after this posting, becoming Captain of New City of Cork in 1829 and much later, in 1854, the Cork Harbour Master (also see Try Again , New City of Cork , Erato ). ‘On passage from Port Talbot to Waterford with coal, her steering carried away at midnight on 23 October 1924. She was driven ashore in a SE gale next day at Kilfarassy, five miles west of Tramore. Captain/Mate George Lane Sutton (b.1865, Queenstown) was a son of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1832/35, Kinsale), Cork Harbour Master, and grandson of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794, Clonakilty). His birth date is incorrect in an IMNCL report where he is also indicated to be a Mate. He indicated his role on Waft to have been a Master (UK M&M papers). He possibly shared that role with Timothy Buckley, while piloting
