19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Fate of ship:

A long life. This brigantine (Reg: 39743), built in 1859, continued service well into the twentieth century and only disappeared from CLIP records in 1940. This was a wooden brigantine. Information on her origin is lacking but age is suggested by Niall O’Brien. Captain John Mathias and Mate John Mathias are presumed father and son and would maintain their same roles in the 18 90s on Farrell’s 553t barque George Peake . Captain Thomas Donovan, who survived the sinking of the Asiatic off the Welsh coast in 1853, rounded off the century as the Master of the Victor . Captain John Evans sailed previously on the William S Green (IMNCL birth dates variability). O’Brien indicated construction c. 1859 – 60 and trade with Blackwater River ports under Captain Evans in the early 1900s.

Additional information:

Mate Michael Lynch) would later be boatswain on Farrell’s Althea and the Master of Michael Fleming’s Citizen .

Seaman Michael Walsh would drown in the wreck of Farrell’s William S Green in 1904.

This brigantine (Reg: 39743) would continue service well into the twentieth century and only disappeared from records in 1940. *IMNCL; CLIP; UK M&M; Sutton Family History; O’Brien, Blackwater and Bride.
