Fate of ship:

Lost at sea 6 September 1875; the crew was saved (IMNCL). On the 7 September 1875 the ship foundered five nautical miles off St Ann’s Head, Pembrokeshire . She was on a voyage from Porthcawl, Glamorgan to Cork (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). St Stephen is located west of St John on the Bay of Fundy. Denis Whelan on an 1863 IMNCL record lists himself as the owner/master of this ship (Reg: 8340) and his birth in Dungarvan. Captain Denis Whelan (b.1820) married Margaret Sutton, daughter of Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1794, Clonakilty) on 7 Aug 1849 at St Pats, Cork. He was Master of the George Sutton for many years and ultimately became the owner of that vessel, which sank in an 1883 storm with total loss of the crew (see George Sutton ).
