Additional information:
Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty) opened his coal business with his son, Abraham George Sutton (b.1842) adjacent to Union Quay on White Street (Slater’s Directory, 1856). Their ships were likely to have docked at Union and George’s Quay. Captain Robert Sutton, his wife Hannah and son Denis aged one year were listed on the 1861 Census for Penarth (Wales) on board the Staghound which was owned by his father, Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Robert would take a break from the open sea with his involvement in the Sutton Cork Steam Tug Company where he captained the 23t steam tug George P Bidder out of Queenstown 1868 – 77. He would have to renew his Master Certificate in 1892, when his papers were washed out of his cabin and overboard in a large sea: see Nancy McSweeney of which ship he was captain. Captain John Twohig who was married to Captain Robert Sutton’s sister -in-law Eliza Sexton on 16 Jun 1863 ( Cork Examiner), was the captain of the Staghound with Robert’s son, George Robert Sutton, as a seventeen-year-old mate on a voyage to St John, New Brunswick departing 6 May and returning 10 August 1874. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History; Slater’s National Commercial Directory , 1856; Wales 1861 Census; Cork Examiner ; Anderson, Sailing Ships of Ireland ; O’Riordan, Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners.
