James Beale (b.1798), who was married to Susana Lecky, was a partner with his brother-in-law in the Robert J Lecky & Co. Ship Repair Yard at Penrose Quay and was a Cork Harbour Commissioner 1836 – 42. It was James Beale of Cork and associates who chartered the Sirius from the St George Steam Company, and placed her under the command of Lieutenant Richard Roberts, RN, of Passage West for the first Atlantic crossing by a steamship (Appendix 6: Sirius ). Apprentice (future Captain) George William Slorach documented a voyage to Australia in this brig. He would later be a mate on the barque Dominica of Cork 1845 – 6 before becoming Master of the Dominica 1846 – 8.
