The Harleys were an important Cork merchant and ship- owning family. Austen Harley 1801 – 80, Ald. John Harley 1778 – 1861 and Thomas Turner Harley 1856 – 1933 were partners in a well-known Cork coal business and were active as Cork Harbour Commissioners in the nineteenth century. This ship, Sarah , was likely named for Sarah Harley, the daughter of Ald. John Harley, who married Edward Scott 1815 – 83. Their son, Sir John Harley Scott 1849- – 1931, served as a Cork Harbour Commissioner in multiple capacities between 1892 and 1929.
