Additional information:
This small vessel, (Reg: 25935) owned by Timothy McCarthy of Ring, Clonakilty, remained in service until 1885 when she was described as a cutter (CLIP) and IMNCL records documented James Downing of Crookhaven as the Owner and James Downing as the Master from Sneem. She was documented in minor Cork coastal trade in the 1870s. Looking back at busier times with a sample six-month summary of Voyages in 1845 (BT98): Clonakilty-Dublin- Newport-Clonakilty, three times and Dublin-Swansea- Clonakilty once. Roughly two voyages each month. This was typical of the Irish coastal trade at that time. Captain Timothy McCarthy had 67-year-old Mate Batt McCarthy with him in 1836; one of the oldest mariners documented in my records. Captain Florence McCarthy was one of two Clonakilty Captain Florence McCarthys born in 1823; the other captain (Cert: 16.519) was born in Ballincourcy and they were, I believe, first cousins. The Clonakilty McCarthys and Murrays were related through marriage and provided Cork with many master mariners. Apprentice Timothy McCarthy gave a slightly premature start date in his UK M&M record. He was identified in Nat Archives as having captained this ship during 1836 (although not evident in UK M&M) and he is probably the Timothy McCarthy of Ring Clonakilty who owned this vessel up until 1885 (CLIP). *IMNCL; #UK Nat Arch BT98/617 and BT112; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History.
