19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Captain Henry Bowman was previously the master of Dominica .

Mate James Hughes Tunbridge gives a perfect description of this vessel, though his dates are slightly off (not unique). Mate David Manning indicated that he sailed on the 200t Albion . He later sailed on Harley ships. The Scotts and the Harleys were related, further justifying his placement here. Mate Samuel Hughes is identified in UK Nat. Archives as the Mate on the Cork vessel Albion in 1843 which seems most likely to be this Scott brig. A Captain S. Hughes was later listed in Lloyd’s as the captain of the Scott vessel Bache McEvers 1850 – 1. This is probably the same man (see Bache McEvers ). Captain D. Driscoll in Lloyd’s has not been identified. There were numerous mariners named D. Driscoll from Cork/West Cork listed in the UK Nat Archives! Kelleher in the book: The Alliance of Pirates indicates the Driscolls of West Cork to have been a major established seafaring family, notably in the Baltimore area, prior to the seventeenth century. Lloyd’s; UK M&M; UK Nat Arch. BT112/31; Kelleher, The alliance of pirates.
