19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Master Certificate in 1854. He would renew his certificate in 1862 when lost while captain of the Harley steam tug Pilot . Abraham Sutton (b.1813) co-owned, with Captain Nathaniel Sutton (b.1835), a steam tug carrying the same title of Pilot (and presumably corresponding function) in the late 1860s and 70s. Apprentice (future Captain) Denis Driscoll would move to Monkstown in his later life, where his widowed mother-in- law, Maryanne (Sexton) Sutton, was retired (see Amaranth , Staghound ). She had been married to Captain Robert Sutton (b.1826/29, Kinsale). Captain Denis Driscoll became a Cork Harbour Commissioner for the Lower Harbour 1897 – 1921. The wrecking of this brigantine was confirmed at Youghal, 18 January 1862, with the loss of three of her seven crew. Survivors were rescued by the Coastguard using rocket apparatus (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). The Unseaworthy Ship Commission reported the casualty and loss to have occurred on 3 January 1862. Despite her small size, she traded with Archangel, Russia under Captain R Hughes. Captain Thomas Meredith also documented West Indies trade in 1836 and Russian trade in 1850. Captain Charles Daly documented Jamaica trade. Captain John Dempsey indicated just coastal trade 1842 – 8.
