19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Seaman:

1891 Richard Lynch b.1869 (Youghal)* 1860 – 2 Peter Farrell b.1842 (Youghal)

Apprentice: Fate of ship:

‘The Nameles s, a 143t brig, was lost at the east entrance to Youghal on 7-2-1897. She carried coal and iron from Cardiff for Youghal’ (Bourke). This ship traded with British North America in 1860s and exported timber down the Blackwater for Farrell 1879 – 80. Richard Farrell was in the timber and corn trades (Slater’s Directory) and owned several ships sailing out of Youghal in the late 1800s. Captain James Prendergast would next sail on Fanny Palmer , including her final voyage in 1872. Captain Andrew McDonnell would later captain the Donovan and Sutton ships Grand Master , Sarsfield and Waft. Mate Michael Murphy previously sailed with Captain Andrew McDonnell on the Countess of Durham . Mate Timothy Bowen (b.1831/34, Youghal) (typical birthdate variability on IMNCL reports) would serve as boatswain on Countess of Durham 1872 – 3. The Youghal mariner community filled a high proportion of the crew positions on Youghal ships. CLIP indicates her move from Port of Bideford to Cork in 1862, but not so quick in Lloyd’s Registry. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Slater’s National Commercial Directory, 1881; Bourke, Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast; O’Brien, Blackwater and Bride; www.irishwrecksonline.net.
