19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Additional information:

This schooner (Reg: 19020) was built in Clonakilty on Deasy’s Quay in 1847 and owned by Timothy Murray of Clonakilty until 1885 (CLIP; Tuipéar, T., Historical walk of Clonakilty ). Apprentice Timothy Murray provided dates that are incompatible with construction. This future Captain Timothy Murray would die in a shipping mishap in Portugal in 1857 (see Bessie Bent). The mariner Murrays and McCarthys of Clonakilty were related both professionally and by marriage. Captain Florence McCarthy, Mate Laurence Donovan and the younger McCarthys were recorded by the English 1861 Census at the Runcorn docks, Lancashire (Merseyside, near Liverpool) on board the 127t Mary Anne . Captain John Donovan held a Mate Certificate and documented his captaincy of Mary Anne when renewing that certificate in 1875. Captain Timothy McCarthy (b.1837, Clonakilty) was a younger brother of Captain Florence McCarthy and a cousin of Captain Florence McCarthy (b.1823, Ring). Timothy McCarthy would later own and captain the Ospray . *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton Family History; 1861 English Census; Tuipéar, Historical Walk of Clonakilty.
