MARY

Place and date built: Tonnage/ Vessel type:

Bideford 1811 406t; Barque

Home port:

Cork

Owner: Activity: Master:

R Deaves

Foreign trade

1835 Joseph Deaves b.1801 (Cork)#3695

Fate of ship:

This barque was destroyed by fire at Cobh, Co Cork, 1 April 1836 (List of Shipwrecks - Wiki). This identification is supported by her being the sole Cork barque of this name and also her absence in 1836 from Lloyd’s Register which covers July 1836-June 1837. Mary was a popular ship name, presenting problems in differentiation (Appendix 6: Common Ship Names). Trade with New Brunswick documented in 1826. Captain Deaves owned the Bideford built barque Mary , 406t, for many years and had her fitted out for carrying emigrants as well as cargo (Anderson). Captain Joseph Deaves would have been the Captain J Deaves in Lloyd’s on this Deaves ship. He was documented by BT112 on another Deaves ship Pomona for 1836 – 7. # UK Nat Arch BT112; Lloyd’s; Anderson, Sailing Ships of Ireland.
