Captain Nicholas Reynolds, son-in-law of George Sutton, became the owner of record between 1882 – 8. (see her sister ship George Sutton ). Mate Robert Reynolds was a son of Captain Nicholas Reynolds, and a grandson of Captain George Sutton (b.1804). He was Captain of Sutton’s Reward in 1873, would earn his Mate certificate in 1874 and then his Master Certificate in 1875. Apprentice Robert Francis Reynolds, son of Captain Robert F Reynolds, would earn his Mate Certificate in 1880. He died when the Auk was lost with all hands in the North Sea on 12 December 1883. Apprentice James Lane Sutton, the Harbour Master’s son, on first voyage here but abandoned a life at sea, moved to Australia and married Anne Geary in Sydney, 15 February 1890.
