(b.1872), became doctors representing the shift from maritime pursuits taking place among the Suttons of Cork at that time.
Captain John Twohig, Captain Daniel Twohig and Mate Robert Twohig on Marco Polo were father and sons.
Captain Jeremiah Falvey, previously Master of Sutton’s Camilla , relieved John Twohig (b.1804, Kinsale) for this final fatal voyage (he was the mate prior to this 1881 voyage). Other mariners lost were Mate Jeremiah Sullivan, Seamen Michael Tobin and Maurice Murphy and Apprentice William Twohig. Seaman Michael Falvey (b.1859, Cork) deserted the ship prior to the Cork departure and survived. Seaman (future Captain) Jeremiah Collins would later become a Cork Harbour Commissioner and was an ardent Nationalist. He was responsible for the smuggling of Captain Robert Monteith and Liam Mellows out of the country in 1916 (O’Riordan) and was l ater involved in the War of Independence. (Appendix 6: Upnor ). Rachel Wheeler recalls her grandmother, Evelyn Santry (b.1908) Jeremiah’s granddaughter, telling her of coming down to breakfast as a young girl at Captain Jeremiah Collins’ home to find men dressed in women’s clothing (as nuns) at the table; apparently prepared for a trip. Robert Monteith, who survived the journey by U-boat to Ireland with Sir Roger Casement in 1916, died on 18 February 1956; the same day that Judge, Sir T Humphry who sentenced Roger Casement to be hung in 1916, passed away. Apprentice Cornelius Collins would be a mate under Captain Jeremiah Collins (b.1854) on James A Harley in 1880. Rachel Wheeler stated that Jeremiah had a mariner brother, Cornelius (b.1855), who later emigrated to Boston. *IMNCL; CLIP; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton and Collins Family Histories; Rachel Wheeler, Collins family tree; O’Riordan, Portraiture of Cork Harbour Commissioners.
