Additional information:

Captain Mathias documents a Cork to Lisbon voyage. Captain John Mathias was listed as J Mathews in Lloyd’s. His Master Certificate number was 44.460 in 1851, becoming 75.788 on renewal of his Certificate, which was stolen from the E liza O’Keeffe in 1871. The Registration Number 109.000 clearly links both sets of papers. It is well worth while reading his letter of 1871, in which he declines on principle to swear an oath, but instead makes a declaration, relative to his lost papers and in accordance with a then recent Act of Parliament. Perhaps a man of deep religious convictions. He lived in Ballinacurra, adjacent to Midleton.
