19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Additional information:

This ship sailed on American and Mediterranean routes. The Scotts were the leading shipowners in Cork in the mid- nineteenth century (see Blue Jacket ). Captain Benjamin Askey served on Cork vessels and gave a Passage West residence address for 1850 (UK M&M). 1876 found him still active as Captain of the 1,239t Cork Ship Light Brigade . He might seem to be a more youthful Benjamin Askey on that ship, since he gave an age of 55 years on that IMNCL report, but his Certificate number 35.073 confirms him to be the same older man born in 1811. Captain William Carroll, while he sailed out of some distant ports including Calcutta and Newbury Port Massachusetts, mainly sailed out of Cork.

Fate of ship:

The last service year for Magyar (Reg: 13174) in IMNCL records, was 1874. This vessel (Reg: 13174) described as a schooner or a brigantine at varying times by different sources but remaining of comparable tonnage and built in Prince Edward Island in 1849. A change in brigantine and schooner rig was common enough. Captain John Prendergast was probably the Captain Prendergast in Lloyd’s based on review of other Youghal Prendergast master mariner paperwork. He previously captained Little Queen . There were three generations of Prendergast captains of Youghal. John (b.1797), Martin (b.1818), John (b.1823), Michael (b.1826), James (b.1833) (IMNCL) and James (b.1846). All sailed on ships variably designated between the Ports of Cork and Youghal.
