19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

passengers and general cargo and returning with timber (Thuillier). McDaniel owned several Kinsale vessels in the mid- 1800s including Erin, Mary Ann, Acadia and Elizabeth. Captain Henry Bowman consistently captained Cork ships, starting in 1822, and was Master of Dominica of Cork for many years. Captain Feneran’s service dates culled from a combination of BT112 and Lloyd’s records. Captain O’Brien identified by UK M&M record (Cert: 54.420). Mate Josiah Hughes next moved to William Penn of Youghal as Master in 1842. He described Lord Sandon to be of the ‘Port of Kingsale’. I have previously seen this spelling variation on documents. Joshua Hughes would have been well versed on navigation charts and maps of the era as he transitioned from Mate to Master. Some of the finest maps were of Dutch origin and spelled the port ‘Kingsale’. Such is the case with the map by the Dutch eighteenth-century cartographer Nicholas Visscher (Fig. 27). Note also the Bany (Bandon) river and the absence of Courtmacsherry at that time, which was prior to the silting of Timoleague, perhaps partly caused by the Lisbon Earthquake tsunami 1755. The increase in the size of ships and the growth of Bandon and Clonakilty under the patronage of Richard Boyle also contributed to the demise of Timoleague as a harbour (Whooley 2015) (see Thomas & Anne ). Seaman (future Captain) John Stamp was unsure of his precise dates of service on Lord Sandon . He would later sail on many sailing ships out of Kinsale.
