19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

next captain Nancy Brown , taking over that role from Captain Henry Brown (b.1812, Passage West), whom I believe to have been one of the Passage West shipyard brothers. Captain Michael Glavin would subsequently captain another Farrell schooner, the Witch. CLIP documents Jane & Mary Anne (Reg: 16267) passing to Richard Farrell of Youghal on or before 1858 and her continued operation until disappearing from the records in 1887. Impressive that this well-built (and well-maintained) Brown schooner should last from when Captain Abraham Sutton became her first captain in 1835 until after his death in 1886. *IMNCL; # UK Nat. The Jersey Tar survived a collision in fog in the 1880s en route from Cardiff to Youghal with coal but was considered too costly to repair (O’Brien). Registered Port variously reported as Youghal and Cork. The vessel was noted for its figurehead of a sailor with a naval cap and a collar (O’Brien). Captain John McCarthy has been given service dates that are a combination of Lloyd’s and UK M&M. Captain Thomas Donovan survived the sinking in 1853 of the Asiatic in which Captain Thomas Sutton (b.1797/98, Clonakilty) drowned (see Asiatic ). He obtained his Master Certificate in 1856 and moved to Youghal, where he mastered ships in the coasting trade and had mariner sons who sailed with him ( Dei Gratia ). Regarding his service dates, while CLIP documents the vessel into the 1880s, IMNCL documents Captain Donovan only until 1870.
