Apprentice: Fate of ship:

Lost 27 May 1877 off the Wexford coast, carrying coals from Cardiff to Cork. Captain Flynn stated Seaman Matthew Brien died from lung congestion. The remainder of the crew survived (IMNCL). 1876 James Austin Harley lived at St Luke’s Cross and would have been a neighbour of Captain George Sutton (b.1804, Clonakilty). Prior to purchase by Harley of Cork in 1873, Island Queen (Reg: 45352) had been owned by William Whelan and Richard Curran of Dungarvan and traded with South America, North America and the West Indies. During the American Civil War, en route from Le Havre to New Orleans she made a successful blockade run for the Confederates with armaments, evading Union warships to arrive at Fort Fisher at the New Inlet of the Cape Fear River, N Carolina. See Mary for the failed experience in blockade running of Mate Robert Sutton (b.1836, Cork) on a Liverpool vessel. Also Brisk for Austin Harley (b.1827, Cork) and his blockade running experience, and then America in the Appendix 6 for details of the famed racing yacht and her dual roles as both a blockade runner and a blockade squadron ship. Captain David Flynn lived at the lower end of Wellington Road in 1876 (Verdon Place) making him a neighbour of Captain Robert Sutton (b.1832, Courtmacsherry), who lived at River View. Seaman John Power also served on Harley’s Lady Sale . Seaman Thomas Bride would serve on the barque Canada in 1877, obtain his Mate Certificate in 1880, and then serve on North American ships 1880 – 2, obtaining his Master Certificate at the Port of Cork in 1882. *IMNCL; CLIP; UK M&M; Irish & Kelly, Two centuries of tall ships in Waterford.
