19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Place, it was commandeered by the Black and Tans as their Headquarters during the War of Independence.

Four pairs of master mariner brothers were associated with this ship: Abraham Sutton and George Sutton, Nathaniel Sutton and George Nathaniel Sutton, Robert Sutton and John Sutton and lastly, Robert Francis Reynolds and Benjamin Vincent Reynolds. The Reynolds and Donovans were related to the Suttons by marriage. Mate (and future Captain) Timothy John Donovan was the son of Captain Timothy Donovan (b.1805, Kinsale) and he was recorded by the **Scotland 1861 Census as the Mate on Girl I Love in Dundonald, Ayreshire along with Captain Nathaniel Sutton and the Captain’s wife, Anne (Lane) Sutton. Captain William Dineen, who had been a mate on the George Lawrence , was the last captain of Girl I Love .
