19th Century Cork Sutton Mariners, Sailing Ships and Crews

Captain John Dempsey documented captaincy of Hannah and Orleans of Cork 1840 –9 in UK M&M, while Lloyd’s continued to document him as captain of Forester until 1844. Lloyd’s was often not too precise in documenting shipmasters. Captain Timothy Donovan just documents himself as the Captain of the smack Erin 59t of Kinsale 1835 – 9 and the schooner Mary Anne of Kinsale (UK M&M) 1839 – 46, while UK Nat Arch BT112 captured him as the captain on Forester in 1839. These were all Kinsale coasters and a coasting voyage on Forester is quite consistent with UK M&M records. The Kinsale Donovan and Dempsey mariner families of Kinsale were, as previously noted, related. Mate Timothy Coglan would move to Friends of Liberty with Captain Copley in 1837. #UK Nat Arch BT112; Lloyd’s; UK M&M; Sutton and Don ovan Family Histories; Bourke, Shipwrecks of the Irish Coast.
