The final of the Count John McCormack competition was aired live on radio with McCormack presiding as one of the judges. The article refers to McCormack's observations that only three percent of soprano singers included songs 'suggestive of an Irish atmosphere' in their programmes. For this competition Rita sang the Irish ballad The Last Rose of Summer.
