Scope and Content: The Charladies' Ball composed by Harry O'Donovan (1890-1973) and sung by Jimmy O'Dea (1899-1965). This comical song is based on a comical character 'Mrs Biddy Mulligan' created by O'Donnovan and O'Dea. The Sheet music includes the words of the song.

Radio Search for Voices. Cork Lady wins in Soprano Class. Newspaper article

Scope and Content: Newspaper extract. An article concerning Rita Lynch, winner of the soprano section of the Irish radio quest for new talent. John MacCormack quoted on Irish folk songs. The final of the Count John McCormack competition was aired live on radio with McCormack presiding as one of the judges. The article refers to McCormack's observations that only three percent of soprano singers included songs 'suggestive of an Irish atmosphere' in their programmes. For this competition Rita sang the Irish ballad The Last Rose of Summer.

The programme for this special Bi-Centenary performance of Handel's Messiah, notes that it took Handel just 24 days to produce this work. 300 voices sing The ''Messiah'' by Harold R. White (''Irish Independent'' Music Critic)

Scope and Content: Newspaper extract. Dublin is celebrating the bi-centenary of the the first production of Handel's ''Messiah''. Rita Lynch, Macroom soprano took part. Harold White (1872-1943) in his article '300 voices sing the Messiah' observes that the bicentenary performance of Handel's Messiah at the Gaiety Theatre, South King Street Dublin on 13th April 1942 in Dublin as 'this brilliant assembly'. Included in the performance were the following choirs; The Dublin Grand Opera Society , Culwick Choral Society, Turner Huggard's Oratorio choir, University Dublin Choral Society and the University College Musical Society. Leader of the Orchestra was Terry O' Connor. Rita was the leading soloist on this special occasion and White notes that although a little 'oversentimental' at times her 'singing is characterised by points of great beauty'.

Harold White, music journalist and composer, assumed the name Dermot MacMurrough when composing. He spent time as a chorister in Christ Church Cathedral 1881 - 1887 as well as an organist at St Mary's and St Andrew's in Dublin. In later life he became a music critique for the Irish Independent providing performance notes and reviews.

Composition composed by Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992) English text JJ Horgan. Irish translation Tadhg O Donnchadha. Aloys Fleischmann became professor of Music at University College Cork a position he held until his retirement in 1980. Compositions include large scale works for chorus and orchestra. He was hugely influential in musical life in Ireland.

Scope and Content: The Eire society of Boston presents an evening of musical entertainment featuring: Arthur Fiedler and his world famous POPS orchestra playing an all star programme including some of Ireland's best loved music and an added attraction Rita Lynch, leading soprano of the Dublin Opera Company and Radio Eireann, in her Boston debut. Symphony Hall, Wednesday June 15th 1949 at 8.30pm. Make Reservations now, Use enclosed card, single ticket $2.50 & table of 5 $12.50, The Irish Society of Boston.

The programme included works by Mendelssohn, Stanford, Wagner and Molloy including The Nine Penny Fidil arranged by Herbert Hughes. Fiedler (1894-1979) was an American conductor who led the Boston Pops Orchestra for fifty seasons. The Boston Pops Orchestra is the Boston Symphony orchestra without its principal players.

Attached is some information from Tchaikovsky's working life, how he would walk alone for hours, irrespective of weather, not even taking his dog, whilst he was composing mentally and jotting down notes. Plus, information on other composers.

As per this notice, the programme will include an 80th birthday tribute to Jussi Bjorling (Tenor) 1911-1960, presented by Peter Aherne. The programme will also feature a guest appearance by Rita Lynch (Soprano).

Jussi Bjorling (1911-1960) was a Swedish Tenor who was renowned for his Italian and French musical interpretations.

Scope and Content: Invitation to the Shaws to attend the 250th Anniversary performance by Our Lady's Choral Society and the Palestrina Choir.

A letter from the Director of Our Lady's Choral Society inviting Rita to a performance of Handel's Messiah for the 250th Anniversary due to be performed at The National Concert Hall, Dublin on Monday 13th April 1992. He writes 'I understand that you were one of the soloists for its 200th Anniversary in 1942. 'Our Lady's Choral Society Choir are presenting the work in collaboration with the boys of the Palestrina choir. Founded in 1945 by Vincent O'Brien, first musical director of Radio Eireann and singing tutor to the great tenor John McCormack Our Lady's Choral Society comprises of members of many Roman Catholic church choirs in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Present on the occasion of their first gathering at the Capitol Theatre in Dublin on December 16th 1945 was President Sean T O'Kelly and Taoiseach Eamon de Valera. National Concert Hall, Dublin: 13th April 1992. Programme includes list of artists including Soprano Cara O Sullivan, Tenor Peter Kerr, Mezzo Soprano Deirdre Cooling Nolan, Bass Gerard O Connor. Gentlemen of Our Lady's Choral Society, Music Director, Proinnias O Duinn, Boys of the Palestrina Choir, Pro Cathedral, Dublin, Director Ite O'Donnovan. National Sinfonia, conductor Poinnias O Duinn.

Composed in 1741 and premiered at the Music Society's rooms at Fishamble Street, Dublin on 13th April 1742. The premiere performance included choristers and soloists from two cathedrals including St Patrick's Cathedral (Dean Jonathan Swift). Soloists included mezzo soprano Susanna Cibber and librettist Charles Jennens.
