Provision Check Account Book

Scope and Content: Volume documenting the provision check account and the provision receipt and consumption account for each week in each half-year. The provision check account records class number, meals, number of inmates for each meal each day, and the scale of dietary. The provision receipt and consumption account records provisions (e.g. bread, butter) and necessaries (e.g. coal, soap), articles on hand and received, consumed, remaining, and required. Smaller tables note officers’ weekly allowances, numbers of inmates, summaries of contractors’ supplies of m ilk, and weekly average costs. An ‘Ingredients Table’ gives recipes for quantities of tea, pea soup, beef tea, sweet boiled rice, Irish stew, and cocoa.

Workhouse Farm Account Book

Scope and Content: Record of farm stock on hand, purchased, sold, and consumed for each financial half-year. The volume notes the date, stock on hand at the commencement of the half-year, stock purchased, seed purchased, balance (profit), stock sold, stock or vegetables consumed in the Workhouse, balance (loss), and the value of stock on hand at the close of the half-year. Stock is generally itemised under each heading. This format of recording debit and credit for each half-year is described as the ‘Master’s Form’. Many forms are signed or initialled, and some are initialled or stamped by auditors. The volume continued to be used in the same fashion after the abolition of the Workhouse.
