Scope and Content: De Róiste and his wife are on a break at Ringabella. Recounts being awakened with news of landing of Free State troops in Cork, landing at Passage, buildings set on fire by irregulars, sounds of artillery, explosions and machine gun fire, stopping of Crosshaven train. He climbed Faihíní hill with field glasses getting a wide view of the area. Cork city was quiet yesterday afternoon. Danger of food shortages, but shoals of fish appear on shore. There is a broad column of smoke towards the city. His wife' returned to the city with a promise to return the next day. His heart is heavy at the 'fratricidal strife', but he is 'clear in conscience...that I did what I could to prevent it.... It seemed fated to be- God's punishment upon some sins of the Irish people...there can be no great or noble or idealistic end achieved now....the unarmed Irish people are ground between the two forces....'. He hears of burning of barracks etc in the city, the irregulars fleeing. 14 Aug hears of death of Arthur Griffith. Recounts his wife attempting to leave the city via Ballygarvan-Carrigaline, amid fighting on a hill near Douglas, meeting bands of irregulars en route; mentions casualties in the advance from Rochestown.
