Title: TS. letter from George Brady, 3 Carrigside, College Road, Cork, to Liam de Róiste. He is glad to read about his late father George Brady in De Róiste’s series of articles about the Gaelic League in Cork. Recounts some memories of the Blackpool Gaelic League Orchestra which began in 1906, composed of 2 groups including Dan Corkery, Pat Harrington, Miss McLoughlin and a group of Tomás MacCurtain and members of the branch in Pine Street. Donal Corkery played the cello with Bob Cashman, and MacCurtain lead the violins with Brady’s brother who is now professor in the School of Music. He himself played the viola and his fathers old bandsmen played brass. This was the Autumn of 1906 with the Liberal victory in England and hope that Home Rule would be granted. He gave individual lessons and MacCurtain and the others got on very quickly, so that in less than a year they could put on a concert in the Blackpool Timber Yard organised by Father Augustine. Mrs. Denny Lane was present, supplying a link with the past. Also refers to Munster Feis at City Hall, holidays at Ballingeary, concert for Sinn Féin at City Hall. He was the last to play the Exhibition organ at City Hall before it was burnt down by the Black and Tans. The Blackpool orchestra lead to other things including the Cork Dramatic Society and ‘never-to-be- forgotten’ performances in the Dún under Denis Breen. Level: Item Extent: 2pp Part of: U271/J/010
