Scope and Content: Fawsitt’s ‘delightful communication’ arrived when his friend Father Kilty was visiting and perusing JJ (Walsh’s) interesting ‘brochure’ (a short memoir). He has written to Walsh himself asking if the book is to be on sale. The details of the (Dec 1913) City Hall Volunteer meeting ‘have never been published’. De Róiste recalls various items including Fawsitt standing on a table, addressing the multitude, and later getting hundreds of Volunteer enrolment forms filled in. He remembers nominating Tomas MacCurtain as treasurer. He does not recall the gathering at the corner of Sheares Street and Patrick Street, but recalls the train incident perfectly at Glanmire Station when JJ approached a detective there and asked him if he had an arrest warrant, and later JJ slipped out at Inchicore before the police boarded the train at Knightsbridge. Refers to his undertaking to write up his own reminiscences, ‘as you know I am constitutionally lazy.’ He has many notes and diaries of the earlier years 1900 to 1914, and later during the ‘terror years’ and the ‘split’. He sometimes gets cynically inclined to destroy them all, as ‘many of the facts recorded at time of their occurrence would not be believed...Popular opinion and popular history go their own way, irrespective of facts.’ Refers to his address last year on the early years of the Gaelic League in Cork to the Cumann Liteardha na Gaedhilge, ‘Mise agus and Connradh,’ that helped to stir his memory, but he is doubtful the present generation would be interested. He recently has been researching the ‘antediluvian’ ancient origins of Ireland. Comments on the photos in JJ’s book. Sends best wishes. Writes, in the margin, ‘when did you and I meet first? I recollect you at Murrays, Grand Parade, when I said I was general factotum at Paddy Corcoran’s.’
