Title:

MS. Letter from Padraig Ua Searcaigh, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon (anti-

treaty proponent) to Liam de Róiste. Level: Item Extent: 18pp Part of: U271/H/3/G/1 Scope and Content:

He noticed in today’s ‘Independent’ that de Róiste is ‘giving way to disappointment and gloomy thoughts’. Mentions their talk on the stairway of the Gresham where they ‘agreed that the point of our dispute could never be settled by any kind of force’ except that which would annihilate the party of 1916. De Róiste could not see victory for the republic in a war with England. Says “ The smile of an Englishman’ is as deadly to the Irishman of 1922 as it was to the Queen’s O’Donnells and O’Connors and O’Briens and McCarthys and all the rest…”. Accuses the pro-Treaty faction of being ‘the Kings chosen favourite in this war of Gael against Gael.’ He believes in de Róiste’s and Barry Egan’s honesty, but not that of Arthur Griffith. Refers to the ‘Free Slave State.’ Continues with a detailed opinion concerning the Anglo-Irish Treaty and Civil War. Recommends calling a Truce of the Sacred Heart and to build a basilica using Irish materials and labour as a means of knitting the community. Encloses ‘General outline of the Plan of Peace and Construction.’
