MS. letter from Stephen P. Cahalan, Watchmaker and Jeweller, Corner

House, Patrick St./Grand Parade, Cork to 'Dear Mr. de Róiste', Liam de Róiste. Level: Item Extent: 2pp Part of: U271/H/3/E Scope and Content: Refers to his personal friendship with the heads of the Republican command in Cork. He arranged a conference between Commandant Crofts of the I.R.A. and 'Messrs. Day T.D. Nason [&] Weldon of Labour. 'The exchange of opinions cleared the air a good deal and a feeling of goodwill and sympathy now exists which previously had been entirely absent'. He suggested to Nason the appointment of Sean Hegarty as Minister of Defence, which 'would effect a permanent settlement of the whole business'. The 'Cork influence' with the National Labour Executive would be used if desired. Crofts said that the matter was one for his chief, Liam Lynch, alone, but 'the idea had created an entirely new situation' and he was encouraged to proceed. With de Róiste's blessing, the Peoples Rights can force a meeting of An Dáil and a concrete proposal. Michael O'Herlihy IDA (Cork Industrial Development Association) 'will vouch for my credentials'.
