CONTEXT Creator:

Cork Literary and Scientific Society

Biographical/Administrative History: Cork Philosophical and Literary Society (?1816), met at Faulkener's Lane and was possibly dissolved in 1820. Cork Scientific and Literary Society established ?1820-1823, later holding meetings at the Royal Cork Institution lecture room, Nelson Place, and later the Crawford School of Science and Art. Another possible precursor was Cork Philosophical Society, which dissolved in ?1819. A note by Richard Caulfield on a minute book notes that the Cork Literary and Scientific Society was established in 1834. Archival History: Donated by Alec R.Day in 1973 forming part of the 'Day Papers' accession together with the records of the Royal Cork Institution, and the Richard Dowden papers. Documents of the precursor body, the Cork Philosophical and Literary Society, donated in the 'Day Papers', have been integrated with the CLS collection.
